Senior Unity XR Developer Application | Stencil VR
Stencil VR is a mixed-reality app for the Meta Quest that’s changing how artists create. Our tool lets anyone turn their digital designs into a scalable, projected stencil they can trace onto any physical surface.
Our app has become a game-changer for professional muralists, who use it to project and trace complex, large-scale designs in a fraction of the time. We've built a passionate, fast-growing community of artists, crafters, and creators who genuinely love the tool and are constantly discovering new ways to use it.
We are looking for a Senior Unity XR Developer to help us build the next generation of Stencil VR. You will work directly on the application, improving the existing experience, implementing a redesigned hand-tracking interface, and help evolve the project into a maintainable, cross-platform Unity XR application that can support additional headsets and ecosystems.
This is a hands-on role for someone who is comfortable taking ownership of features, solving challenging XR problems, and contributing to both technical and product decisions.
Role: Senior Unity XR Developer (Contract)
Pay: $80 USD per hour
Hours: 20 to 40 hours per week at your discretion (full time preferred)
Location: Remote
Duration: Ongoing
Build and improve the product: Develop new features, refine existing systems, and make Stencil VR more intuitive, stable, and polished.
Implement a new hand-tracking experience: Help bring our redesigned hand-tracking and gesture-based interface to life.
Develop core XR systems: Work on passthrough, spatial tracking, XR interactions, world-space UI, and the precise, persistent placement of virtual content within physical environments.
Build for multiple XR platforms: Develop and maintain shared Unity systems that can support multiple XR devices while managing platform-specific SDKs, capabilities, input methods, and performance requirements.
Improve performance and reliability: Profile, debug, and optimize the application for standalone XR hardware.
Collaborate on product decisions: Work directly with our founder and UX designer to evaluate technical tradeoffs, shape features, and determine the best path from concept through release.
Unity expertise: Professional experience building well-structured, maintainable applications in Unity.
XR development experience: Hands-on experience developing and optimizing XR applications.
Relevant technical knowledge: A strong understanding of XR fundamentals, OpenXR, Unity’s XR tools, passthrough, spatial tracking, hand tracking, XR interaction, and world-space UI.
Performance expertise: Experience profiling and optimizing Unity applications for standalone XR hardware.
URP experience: Proficiency with Unity’s Universal Render Pipeline and mobile rendering constraints.
Independent ownership: The ability to take a feature from initial discussion through implementation, device testing, debugging, and release.
AI-assisted development: Experience using modern AI coding and agentic development tools to accelerate implementation, debugging, testing, documentation, and refactoring while maintaining strong engineering judgment and code quality.
Passion for Creators: You care about building tools that actually help people create.

Portfolio, GitHub Profile, or relevant work samples
Please share links to relevant work, including shipped XR applications, polished prototypes, portfolio projects, GitHub repositories, videos, or case studies.
Prioritize examples that demonstrate experience with spatial interaction, mixed reality, hand tracking, world-space UI, persistent content placement, cross-platform XR architecture, or other systems relevant to Stencil VR.
Important: Please specify your exact contribution for each example.
